At the bedside
Formal Definition
A procedure performed at the patient's location rather than in the OR or procedure suite.
How It's Used on the Ward
"We'll do this at the bedside" — thoracentesis, paracentesis, LP, and tube placements are often bedside procedures.
Example
""Patient has a large symptomatic pleural effusion. We'll do a thoracentesis at the bedside — ultrasound is available on the cart.""
Clinical Context
Many procedures that used to require the OR are now done at the bedside with ultrasound guidance. Knowing the basics of US-guided procedures is increasingly expected on wards.
