Formal Terminology Beginner Internal Medicine

Foley

Formal Definition

An indwelling urinary catheter placed through the urethra into the bladder for continuous urine drainage.

How It's Used on the Ward

"Put in a Foley" or "Foley to gravity" - common nursing/medical order.

Example

""Patient is being strict I&Os and we can't get an accurate urine output from bedpan. Let's place a Foley. And remember - document the indication. CAUTI prevention matters.""

Clinical Context

Foleys are a major infection risk (CAUTI). Always have a clear indication and remove as soon as possible. "Just in case" is not an indication.
