Formal Definition
A patient who presents to the ED or is admitted frequently, often for chronic conditions or social issues.
How It's Used on the Ward
"They're a frequent flyer" - the staff recognizes them by name.
Example
""Mr. Davis is back again - frequent flyer with COPD exacerbations. This is his 4th admission in 3 months. We need to address the underlying issues.""
Clinical Context
While common, this term can carry bias. Focus on why they keep coming back rather than labeling. Often indicates gaps in outpatient care.
