Ward Slang Beginner Consults & Referrals

OOR (out of room)

Formal Definition

The patient is not in their assigned room — common when they're at a procedure, imaging, or test.

How It's Used on the Ward

"The patient is OOR" — means don't go looking in their room.

Example

""Pre-rounding: Mr. Chen is OOR for his stress test. I'll catch him when he gets back. Everyone else is in their rooms.""

Clinical Context

Track where your patients are before rounds so you're not searching. When a patient is OOR, note WHERE they went so you can find them when needed.
