Saline lock
Formal Definition
A peripheral IV catheter kept patent with a small amount of saline flush, without continuous infusion.
How It's Used on the Ward
"SL" or "salines" — patient has IV access but no active fluids running.
Example
""Patient is eating and drinking well, no longer needs fluids. Keep the saline lock in case we need urgent IV access.""
Clinical Context
Saline locks are preferred over continuous fluids when IV access is desired but no active infusion is needed. Needs to be flushed regularly to maintain patency.
