Stat
Formal Definition
Immediately. From Latin "statim." Means this needs to happen right now.
How It's Used on the Ward
"I need a stat CBC" = I need this lab result as fast as possible.
Example
""Get me a stat lactate, blood cultures, and start a fluid bolus. This patient looks septic and I don't want to wait.""
Clinical Context
Don't overuse stat orders - if everything is stat, nothing is stat. Reserve it for genuinely urgent situations.
