Walking wounded
Formal Definition
A patient who is medically ill or recently post-procedural but ambulatory and hemodynamically stable, requiring minimal nursing interventions and essentially no acute inpatient-level care; the term is borrowed from military medicine describing soldiers with minor injuries who can still self-ambulate to the aid station, applied clinically to low-acuity inpatients who are "healed enough" that their continued hospitalization creates more friction than benefit.
How It's Used on the Ward
"Walking wounded" or "almost-out-the-door" — the patient is medically cleared but stuck in the hospital for logistical reasons: awaiting ride home, awaiting imaging follow-up, awaiting placement paperwork; they're eating in the cafeteria and ambulating the halls while the team waits for the system to catch up.

Clinical Context
Downstream effect: walking wounded patients who occupy acute hospital beds when they don't need acute care are called "boards" or "boarders" — they contribute to ED boarding, throughput metrics, and capacity strain. Insurance typically will not pay for additional inpatient days once a patient is documented as medically stable for discharge if the only reason for continued stay is social/logistical. Operational teams (case management, social work) become critical for resolving the disposition barriers. Distinct from "walkie-talkie" — walking wounded implies recent significant illness or procedure, walkie-talkie implies a generally well inpatient.
