Formal Definition

To suture or staple the surgical incision at the end of a procedure.

How It's Used on the Ward

"Do you want to close?" - the attending asking if you want to do the suturing. Say yes.

Example

"Attending: "Nice work retracting. You want to close?" You: "Absolutely." This is your chance to practice suturing on a real patient."

Clinical Context

Being offered the close is a reward for good performance during the case. Always accept. Practice your knots beforehand.
