Disposition pending
Formal Definition
A patient status indicating that the clinical team has determined the patient is medically stable for discharge but the logistics of the next care setting — such as SNF placement, home services, or insurance authorization — have not yet been arranged.
How It's Used on the Ward
"Dispo pending" — medically done but stuck waiting for placement, paperwork, or social work coordination.
Example
""Morning rounds: 'Patient in 312 is medically stable — dispo pending SNF placement. Case management is working on it; three facilities rejected her due to the wound VAC.'""
Clinical Context
Disposition pending is where most length-of-stay delays live. It is a care coordination problem, not a medical one. Know who owns each piece: case management (SNF/LTACH placement, insurance auth), social work (home safety, family support, substance use), nursing (home IV antibiotics teaching). As a student, tracking dispo status for your patients shows situational awareness beyond the clinical picture.
