CTD (continues to deteriorate)
Formal Definition
A patient whose condition is worsening despite interventions.
How It's Used on the Ward
"Patient is CTD" — used in notes, signouts, and urgent calls.
Example
""ICU overnight note: patient continues to deteriorate. Developed progressive hypoxemic respiratory failure on maximum HFNC. Family is at bedside. Considering intubation.""
Clinical Context
CTD implies a trend of decline, not a single bad day. When someone says a patient is "CTD," it's a warning signal to the team. Escalation of care (ICU, pressors, intubation) is often imminent.
