GCS (Glasgow Coma Scale)
Formal Definition
A standardized scoring system (3-15) assessing consciousness based on eye opening, verbal response, and motor response.
How It's Used on the Ward
"What's the GCS?" - quick way to communicate how altered the patient is.
Example
""GCS is 8 - eyes opening to pain, incomprehensible sounds, withdrawing to pain. That's an E2V2M4. Need to consider intubation.""
Clinical Context
GCS < 8 = can't intubate (protect airway). This is a critical threshold. Know the scale cold.
