I&D (incision and drainage)
Formal Definition
A minor surgical procedure to open and drain an abscess or infected collection.
How It's Used on the Ward
"Needs an I&D" — a quick bedside or ED procedure for abscesses.
Example
""The patient has a fluctuant mass on his forearm with overlying erythema and warmth. Surgical consult for I&D and culture of the purulent drainage.""
Clinical Context
I&D is one of the first procedures you'll see done. Culture the drainage — abscesses are often polymicrobial and may need coverage beyond simple incision alone.
