NG tube (nasogastric tube)
Formal Definition
A tube passed through the nose into the stomach for gastric decompression or feeding.
How It's Used on the Ward
"Place an NG" or " NG to suction" — very common on the wards.
Example
""Patient has a complete SBO with multiple episodes of vomiting. Let's place an NG tube to intermittent suction and get a surgical consult.""
Clinical Context
NG tubes are used for decompression (obstruction, ileus) or feeding. Always confirm placement with an X-ray before using for feeds or meds — bedside blind placement can be in the lung.
