NSVD

Formal Definition

Normal Spontaneous Vaginal Delivery; a vaginal delivery that occurs without the use of operative instruments (forceps, vacuum) and without cesarean section, typically preceded by spontaneous labor onset, though the term is also applied to deliveries after induction.

How It's Used on the Ward

"She had an NSVD" — standard documentation abbreviation for a straightforward vaginal delivery.

Example

""G2P1 at 39+4 weeks: NSVD at 14:32, male infant, 7 lbs 4 oz, Apgar 8 and 9, delivered over an intact perineum with no lacerations. Placenta delivered spontaneously, estimated blood loss 250 mL.""

Clinical Context

NSVD documents the mode of delivery and is important for obstetric history (impacts future deliveries, VBAC candidacy, risk stratification). Operative vaginal delivery (OVD) using forceps or vacuum extractor is documented separately. Third-degree and fourth-degree lacerations must be documented — associated with long-term pelvic floor dysfunction. Immediate post-delivery: uterine tone assessment (prevent PPH), placenta inspection (ensure complete delivery), maternal vitals.
