Ward Slang Beginner Abbreviations & Shorthand

Wet read

Formal Definition

A preliminary, unofficial interpretation of a radiological study provided by the on-call or reading radiologist before the formal dictated and signed report is finalized — used to guide immediate clinical decision-making.

How It's Used on the Ward

"Get a wet read" or "radiology wet-read shows pneumothorax" — the informal verbal or phone report from the radiologist before the official read.

Example

""CT chest ordered at 2am for acute chest pain and hypoxia. Called the radiology fellow for a wet read: 'Large saddle pulmonary embolism, right heart strain. Get CT-PA protocol if not already done.' Hematology notified, anticoagulation started before the official report landed.""

Clinical Context

Wet reads are critical in emergency situations — the formal report may take hours, but clinical decisions can't wait. However, wet reads are provisional: the official read may add findings or revise impressions. Always review the final report and act on addenda. When calling for a wet read, have the clinical question ready: "I need to know if this is a PE, pneumothorax, or aortic dissection" focuses the radiologist's read.
